On the hunt for the best WordPress themes for food blogs? You’re in luck!

We’ve selected and reviewed 20 of the top WordPress recipe and food blog themes to help you build the website of your dreams.

Food blogs nowadays are rising in popularity as so many home cooks are profiting from their passions simply by sharing their recipes with the world. As an avid cook and foodie myself, I frequent food blogs A LOT.

Some blogs become a staple in my bookmark browser not just for their amazing recipes but also for their overall user experience.

This is why choosing a good theme is a must! In this article, I share with you a few of our top picks for themes as well as some information on how to get started on building a food blog!

Starting a Food Blog

When it comes to starting a food blog that actually makes you money, make a beeline for WordPress.org, the top platform for self-hosted blogs. While there are other “free blogging options”, these won’t really allow you to monetize your blog and is quite limiting in a lot of ways.

Our recommendation is to use WordPress.org (free) and combine it with a hosting plan which I will explain more below.

Step 1: Choose Your Blogging Platform

As mentioned, while it may be tempting to settle for a platform that will allow you to start your food blog for free, it’s inevitable that you’ll run into problems when it comes to building, growing, and monetizing your blog.

Sure, free platforms can be a home for your content, but it also means that you as the blogger, are relinquishing quite a bit of control.

Not only are free platforms horrendously limiting when it comes to customizing your blog, they also have terms of service that effectively make them the owners of your content. The platform can typically use your content without consent, delete your entire blog if you’re found to be in violation of the terms, or shut down entirely!

On top of the ownership issues, free platforms also don’t allow for display ads or many monetization methods… which you may not be worrying about now but will definitely come into play down the road.

All of this is to say that bloggers flock to WordPress.org for good reason. As a self-hosted platform, bloggers have complete and total control over how their blog looks, what they can do with their blog, and how they can monetize their blog.

Step 2: Get Hosting for Your Food Blog

Setting up a self-hosted blog is not as hard as it sounds. In fact, it only takes a few minutes to get the moving pieces in order before you can start building the blog of your dreams!

The first step is to purchase hosting.

When you purchase hosting, you’re putting yourself in control of where your blog lives on the internet. With free platforms, blogs are hosted on the platform’s server. But with self-hosting, you simply have to pay to have your website stored somewhere on the web.

This can be intimidating, but is so worth it in the long run. Plus, with Bluehost, hosting costs less than a cup of coffee every month!

We love to recommend Bluehost to our students. and readers because we’ve had such a positive experience with their hosting.

But don’t just take it from us… Bluehost is actually the most used and trusted hosting network online. It’s also the least expensive (with our discount), allowing you to secure hosting for just $2.95 a month.

Step 3: Choose a Theme for Your Food Blog

Once you’ve got your hosting secured, it’s time to get your food blog up and running! While in the past web designers ran the show, today anyone can build a beautiful, professional-looking blog thanks to themes.

WordPress themes are essentially pre-built websites that users can import and customize to be their own. There are thousands of themes to choose from, all with different styles, designs and price points.

You’ll find that there are heaps of free themes that can be used for food and recipe blogs, but quickly realize that free themes are clunky to work with and super limiting when it comes to customization.

We’ve seen so many people get bogged down by free themes, spending all of their energy trying to get things to look right, rather than working on their content.

That’s why we believe a premium theme is well worth the investment because you can get your desired result with minimal effort and focus on the important things instead of spending months editing the design of your blog.

Premium themes can range in price, but generally run between $35 to $80. But trust me, you’ll be thanking yourself for the purchase once you have a gorgeous blog up and running (in just a few clicks!).
